WINERY KURT ANGERER - KAMPTAL (Lower Austria), next to Wachau

Our friend Kurt Angerer from Lower Austria's wine growing area "Kamptal" has been last years winner of VINARIA "Gruener Veltliner Trophy" as Austria's best producer. This is one of Austria's toughest competitions, as Austria's main grape is Gruener Veltliner (GV) and many producers are participating. This success shall now be advantage for Hafner customers. We offer you a selection of Kurt's GV to ex-cellars pricing, which you might order together with Hafner wines in a mixed case. First we have selected two great wines from vintage 2003. To your explanation: Kurt is rooted into the "terroir" (soil) of his vinyards, so he calls the wines according to the soil the vines are growing. The following two are the "Kies" (stony soil) and the "Loam" (loamy soil).

Gruener Veltliner "Kies" 2003 Fresh aroma of limes and apples, clear and slender fruit, soft and juicy, spiced with pepper, lively acidity, soft note of herbs on the palate, sustaining finish.  (Alc. 12.7 %, res. sugar 2 g/l) 6.60

and unique in Austria!

89 Points, Falstaff Award! Best of "new varieties" category!

The grape "Dornfelder" is a In-grape in Germany, with extreme dark color. We have made a trial how this grape is doing in sunny wine growing area "Neusiedlersee" - with success! This wine, which is according to strict Austrian law not allowed to be called "quality wine" just because this grape is not listed in the "quality grape list", has 13.5 Alc. and was fermented and stored for 18 months in french Allier casks.

Falstaff: "Very dark ruby color, black middle of glas, lila reflexes, in the nose spices and vegetables but nice berryjam nose and fresh figs; very exotic nose with sweetwood touch and hibiskus. Good tannin, good lenght. Potential for storage! Chocolate in the aftertaste, but dry! Excellent to surprise friends in a blind tasting ;-)"

A well structured, very dark ruby, fullbodied wine with its own character. Fruity to dark berries, slightly earthy, harmonic and mild in acidity. An experience, not only for german wine enthusiasts!

"Kashmir" is our term for soft, round and smooth tannins! The wines chosen for the Kashmir, which is just produced in the great red wine vintages (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003) are simply those oak-casks with the smoothest tannin. Every cask tastes a bit different after 18 - 24 months storage, even filled up with same wine. It is not primarily the grape, it is the choice of casks characterising the "Kashmir"!

LATE HARVEST WINES (Spaetlese) are produced from grapes harvested after the main harvest time containing a natural sugar content in the grapes of a minimum of 19 %. Traditionally noble sweet wines are produced out of this type of wines by chilling the fermenting juice and stopping fermentation to receive a residual sugar content. Hafner Late Harvest wines mostly range between 9 - 11 % Vol. Alcohol and 45 - 60 g/l residual sugar. These wines are excellent as an after dinner wine, together with sweet dishes or whenever you are in the mood of having a good glass of dessert wine.

BEEREN AUSLESE (BA) and its relation to Lake Neusiedl and Botrytis Cinerea: A warm summer and a mild autumn combined with the moist air from the mists around the Lake and rivers offer ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea. In the regions around Lake Neusiedl the high average temperatures due to the Pannonian climate (more than 300 sunny days a year) and the regulating character of the immense water surface have an additional influence. Fog and rain showers encourage the growth of noble rot. When the temperature is right the propagation and formation of spores start within a short time. Then the fungus penetrates the skin of the grape and, once inside, it feeds on the tartaric acid and fructose of the ripening grapes which then lose water. Consequently the remaining contents i.e. sugar and varous acids are concentrated. At first isolated groups of botrytis attack the "good" grapes and gradually it affects the whole bunch so that nearly all the grapes become shrivelled. At harvest time the wine-maker selects the ripe grapes for each type of wine in the vineyard itself. As a rule, the winemaker will go around the vineyard several times in order to pick the grape at the right moment, thus yielding the high quality Praedikatsweine. The greatest part of these sweet wines is the so-called "Beeren Auslese". This type of wine is excellent together with cheese, goose liver (pâte) or as a degistive.

ICE WINE (Eiswein) - "a trick of the nature": After two or three frosty nights and a dawn temperature lower than minus -7°C (20°F), the grapes are usually sufficiently frozen to press Eiswein. Frozen conditions have the same effect on the grapes as the natural fungus Botrytis Cinerea, as the low temperature encourage the required concentration of extracts. The grapes, which are harvested in a frozen state, are pressed extremely carefully and slowly to obtain and preserve the high-concentrated must of the grapes. the fine balance between sweetness and acidity is the basis of teh typical character of an Eiswein. An essential element of a classic Eiswein is a certain racy, fiery trait based on a sufficient structure of acidity. The notable difference between Eiswein and traditional dessert wines is, that Eiswein produced by a real expert presents a fine fruitness from the bouquet to the end of the tasting because of the total or parial absence of noble rot. The typical characteristics of the variety should also be noticeable. The high risk involved in the production process is the reason why not all vintages result in an Eiswein harvest. The winery Hafner in Moenchhof, the oldest wine growing community in Austria (1217) was the first producer for Icewine in Austria 1971

GOLD MEDAL "Essencia" are called those noble sweet wines at Hafner's, which have a concentration of sugar at harvest which is much more than necessary by law. This Icewine for instance was harvested at -12°C and therefore had a natural sugar content of 33 KMW (%). Residual Sugar of this wine is about 200 g/l.

Very tightly knit and complex. Good structure and fine nose to peaches and honey. Very long storage potential! Exclusive bottle.

Trocken Beeren Auslese (TBA) is considered to be the top of the quality pyramid within the Praedikatsweine (high quality wines) because it is only produced from grapes which have shrivelled and dried out with the affect of noble rot. Related to above explained Beeren Auslese, TBA is the higher quality. Its juice (must) concentration has to reach a minimum of 30 °KMW (which is equal to 30 % natural sugar content of the grapes). The fermentation of the juice (must) can last several months as they have such a high sugar content. In order to obtain the desired interruption of fermentation, a transfer to another barrel is sufficient. The skill of the expert cellarman is to achieve and maintain harmony between the remaining elements: residual sugar and acidity are supposed to be in a well-balanced relationship. In former days, it was the wine-maker's intenion to give to his dessert wines an oxide touch - for the Hungarian Tokaijer even nowadays this is still valid. In Austria, today's wine-makers prefer a "reductive" development of their wines in order to preserve fruitness and freh character as long as possible. The concentration and natural sugar content of TBA in general is higher than Tokaij or Sauternes, therefore TBA's are the so called "Queen of Wines" - the highest natural sugar concentration possible!

High-quality noble sweet wines - natural sweet

The skill of the expert cellarman is to achieve and maintain harmony between the remaining elements: residual sugar and acidity are supposed to be in a well-balanced relationship. "Chanukah Eiswein"
geerntet 22/23 Dec.

89 Points by Daniel Rogov "HaAretz Israel"

"Excellent"-Award 89 Points - The Underground Wine Journal USA

Very fruity, an excellent Ice Wine, well structured with the elegance of Chardonnay and the fruity character of Scheurebe! Enjoy! The IN-Wine in Hollywood!

"Bright hue of golden straw. The nose clean and has aromas of fragant white peach, honey and apricot. The palate is delicate, medium to fullbodied and nicely balanced. Flavors include honey, white peach, fig, lychee and apricot. Good length and balance on the finish. This wine is delicate, genteel and shows some overall complexity.
