A pleasant combination of walking and
traveling in either one of the ferries "Rudolf" or
"Traun" and enjoying the scenery. Your trip begins at
the west end of Grundlsee where you embark one of the ferries
running the length of the lake, at the small village of Goessl,
you disembark and take short walk, about 20 minutes, to
Toplitzsee. Here you embark a "Plette" (a flat bottom
wooden skiff that is traditionally rowed with one oar) and ride
to the other end of the "Toplitzsee" passing two
spectacular water falls. If your lucky, the Captain will tell you
a little about some of the mysteries of this lake and also give
you some technical data; e.g. that the lake has two bottoms and
that the top of the lake is purest sweet water of best drinking
quality but underneath the lake is salty. After disembarking from
the "Plette" at the east end of the Toplitzsee, you
then take another walk, about 5 min., to the next lake, the
"Kammersee". The Captain will probably tell you a
little about the channel that was dug there by convicts over 100
years ago. I'll leave a little to the Captain to explain. A
memorable little excursion.

In the Styrian "Salzkammergut"
there are abundant biking/mountain biking opportunities, one of
the classical routes is the "R19" the renowned
Salzkammergut bike trail. Take your time before you start, the
starting village "Puergg" is a remarkable little
village. The wide view over the lower lying Enns valley ending on
the right hand side in the "angry" rocks of the
Grimming. In the ancient St. Johannes Chapel you look with
astonishment at the mysterious roman frescos. Accompanied by the
enormous rock debris under the Grimming, the trail passes the
steep sunny field slopes past Tauplitz and then to the huge
ski-jump in "Kulm", continuing through meadows and
fields, past dreamy little villages on to Bad Mitterndorf lying
in the middle of a natural basin surrounded by mountain peaks.
This basin is a nature park with alpine moors and a fascinating
variety from flowers and numerous varieties of orchids. From here
on, you can choose one of three different trails, or to take all
of them, that's the nice part about holidays, you have time to
just time and enjoy yourself; one trail takes you past the
picturesque pilgrim's church "Maria Kumitz" on to
"Knoppen" and "Muhlreith", where you
disappear in the quiet of a shady forest which ends at the
romantic little lake of "Oedensee" which is just
waiting to invite you to take a swim. Two other trails continue
together via the ancient "Salt Road" over the
"Radling" pass the fun holiday landscape of Grundlsee.
The trail follows the shores of the "Grundlsee" until
we arrive at "Goessl", and then ends at the dark green
Toplitzsee with all it's secrets and stories from the past years.
The third trail also follows the trail of the ancient Romans, but
then continues on to cozy little "Ausseer" basin with
the health town of Bad Aussee in the middle. From here on the
trail follows the river "Traun" until we arrive at
"Altaussee" just long enough to cast a view at it's
lake and it's background the "Trisselwand". The trail
continues steadily climbing until will arrive in the "Blaa
Alm" at the foot of the Altaussee's ski resort mountain, the
Loser with it's steep walls. From here on it becomes the trail
becomes quite dramatic, some times steep downhill, other times
not so steep through the water eroded landscape of the
"Rettenbach" with it's cliffs and waterfalls through
gorges until eventually the valley becomes wider and we arrive in
the valley landscape of the "Emperor Town of Bad Ischl"
