Introduction

This site provides free access to the digital Athos Map 2012 (tmL) which can be accessed in three ways: The first one is to upload the free Athos Map 2012 via MapSource, BaseCamp or any freeware to a Garmin device. Second, the map is available for mobile phones that uses the Android operating system. Last the map and it's source files can be downloaded in common data formats such as Google Earth's *.kml, ESRI's shapefile *.shp, or OpenStreetMap's *.osm to use the data for further applications.

The Map is created by using free available data sets and assists the user in navigation and location on the holy Mount Athos and in planning or interpretation of his hike at home. Due to the harsh and Alpine environment on Agion Oros hiking is difficult, challenging and could be dangerous if location is unkown or when the orientation is lost. The image below shows the mapped features of the free Athos Map 2012 (without labels) including the street network, forest streets, trails and the contour lines.

Description (Data Source, Accuracy, Application)

Data Source

Topography: SRTM3 data (dx~70 m, dy~95 m) >> contour lines were interpolated to intervals of 50 m.

Coastlines: Landsat 7 (2000), 14.25 m lateral resolution.

Streets: Aerial photographs (2003) from Google Earth (referenced on UTM34N and converted to WGS84) and GPS tracks.

Trails: Georeferenced aerial photographs (2003) from Google Earth and GPS tracks.

Map Accuracy & Time to walk

Map Accuracy

Steep regions are significantly biased due to the orthorectification of the satellite images which might result in a horizontal accuracy of +/- 100 m. For the main trails, tracks and streets the accuracy is as low as that of the Garmin GPS devices (+/- 5 m). Please find below the maps for the parts in Athos where high-accurate locations are available:

  Region: I.M. Esfigmenou - M. Jovantsa - I.M. Pantokratoros - I.M. Vatopaidiou
  Region: I.M. Sografou - I.M. Xenofontos - Dafni - I.M. Filotheou
Region: Dafni - Sk. Ag. Annis - Kerasia - Megistis Lavras - I.M. Karakalou

Time to walk (incl. GPS surveys). More details and footpath descriptions are found here.

Applications

The author sees the direct application of the digital Map for pilgrims and hikers on Mount Athos. For Hikers the Zwerger Map is highly recommended to be used and provides the best navigation as it is high in detail and accurate in it's location. Unfortunately there are several new forest roads that were not mapped. However, the digital Athos Map does not replace any of the available (hard copy) maps during the travel between the holy monasteries. I further recommend to study also the footpath descriptions found here.

Other applications may encompass scientific projects were some of the author's data could be used for figures etc. or when comparisons between the recorded GPS tracks and the free digital Athos Map 2012 were made (see right screenshot).

Map Information

Trails:

Take care about using the wonderful old trails on mount Athos. Don't underestimate the actual condition of the trails (e.g overgrown) and the time consumption. Thus, several trails imaged on the Maps (Athos Map 2010, Zwerger Map) might not be found in reality today. The trails imaged in Athos Map 2012 are based on GPS tracks and georeferenced aerial photographs where paths were found that might correspond to that of the Zwerger Map. In rare cases it could happen that creeks were misinterpreted as trails. - Again, don't forget to bring a real Map (e.g. the Zwerger Map) - see FAQ. I recommend to study also the footpath descriptions found here.

If you lost (or think that you might have lost) your trail on Mount Athos - immediately turn back and travel to the last (readable and clear) direction sign!

Streets:

Take care during hiking which streets you are use, since there are several one-way (forest) streets. The map might contain some errors in the area spanned between 'Gidospita' - 'Korfoules' - 'Proto Nero' - 'Maroula' - 'Dafnara'. There it could happen that creeks were misinterpreted as small streets. - Again, don't forget to bring a real Map (e.g. the Zwerger Map) - see FAQ.

Miscellaneous:

In addition, due to the clouds in the area spanned between 'Velona' - 'Psiloma' - 'Xeptomata' - 'Provatogreko' - 'Dafnara' - 'Koryfi' - 'Tavrokalyva' there could be more trails or (forest) streets as mapped in this version.

Athos Map for Garmin GPS (e.g. MapSource, BaseCamp)

Garmin MapSource v6.1
Garmin BaseCamp v3.2.2

Installation for Mapsource
  • Since version 0.90d a Setup-Installer is provided to install the Athos Map easily.
  • Previous versions:
  • Download the Athos Map (Megapack) and extract the files from the zip-archive to a folder
  • Check if any existing Garmin Product has the same FID as the Athos Map. The MapSource version uses a FID of 62 which is normally assigned to the 'European City Select V6.00'. You can get your installed FID's from the registry entry (see here) or from programs such as ezMS v1.03 1 | MapsetToolkit v1.77 1. The product code has to be 1 for new versions (MapSource > 6.14.1) and 0 for older versions.
  • Change the *.reg (Registry) file for your operating system (32/64 bit) and adapt the file paths. Note that you have to use the double back-slashes. The Athos Map uses a FID of 62 (=hex;3E,00), but in the registry the 'inverse' hex numbers are used.
  • Apply the edited Registry file and start MapSource (Actual Mapsource | MapSource v6.16.3)

Installation for BaseCamp
  • Since version 0.90d a Setup-Installer is provided to install the Athos Map easily.
  • Previous versions:
  • Download the Athos Map (Megapack) and extract the files from the zip-archive to a folder
  • Check if any existing Garmin Product has the same FID as the Athos Map. The BaseCamp version uses a FID of 63 which is normally assigned to the 'European City Navigator Version 6'. You can get your installed FID's from the registry entry (see here) or from programs such as ezMS v1.03 1 | MapsetToolkit v1.77 1.
  • Change the *.reg (Registry) file for your operating system (32/64 bit) and adapt the file paths. Note that you have to use the double back-slashes. The Athos Map uses a FID of 63 (=hex;3F,00), but in the registry the 'inverse' hex numbers are used.
  • Apply the edited Registry file and start MapSource (Actual BaseCamp | BaseCamp v3.2.2)

Installation on a GPS device
  • Please read the FAQ here

Problems MapSource
  • Version 0.90d with Setup-Installer: If Mapsource will not start or if a wrong Setup-Option was choosen simply de-install the Athos map. You may re-install it with the right option - the written registry entries should be deleted automatically.
  • Previous versions:
  • In the case that Garmin MapSource does no longer start, don't worry. Just open 'regedit' (click start-run and type it) and and remove the 64-bit "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Families\Athos" keys as detailed in your *.reg file. Repeat the change of the *.reg until you get it right. The 32-bit version uses the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families\Athos".
  • When FID is 0, maps should be registered in \%path%\Mapsource\Products\ and not in \%path%\Mapsource\Families.

Problems BaseCamp
  • Version 0.90d with Setup-Installer: If BaseCamp will not start or if a wrong Setup-Option was choosen simply de-install the Athos map. You may re-install it with the right option - the written registry entries should be deleted automatically.
  • Previous versions:
  • In the case that Garmin BaseCamp does no longer start, don't worry. Just open 'regedit' (click start-run and type it) and and remove the 64-bit "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\Mapsource\Families\FAMILY_63" keys as detailed in your *.reg file. Repeat the change of the *.reg until you get it right. The 32-bit version uses the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\Mapsource\Families\FAMILY_63".
  • If you also use an old version of MapSource (6.14.1-) BaseCamp does not start if it founds the registry entry 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Products\Athos' (64-bit) or that without 'Wow6432Node' (32-bit). You should delete this key.

Athos Map for Mobile Phones (Android / Oruxmaps)

Introduction & Description

NEW:

The simplest method to use the Athos Map on mobile phones is the Garmin *.img format in combination with the free application Oruxmaps v5.5.22 or newer (IMG files are supported since v4.8.60).

  • vector map (only 134kb!!)
  • streets (roads, forest roads, etc.)
  • trails (tracks)
  • all labels

Athos Map on a Android mobile device using OruxMaps

OLD: There are various ways to store offline maps to your mobile phone. Unfortunately, in most cases you have to be online before and to download maps from providers such as Google, OpenStreetMap (OSM) or FreeMap. Thus there are a lot of applications (Big Planet Tracks, MyTracks, MapDroyd) that only allow to store maps from these providers, but not self-created, vector-based, maps. The author describes a method using the more flexible and free application OruxMaps to use the Athos Map 2012 (vector map) with a mobile phone. We therefore use the MapFile format *.map which can be created by Osmosis. The Athos Map - map file can be downloaded here. The mobile version of the Map is still in a test phase and currently supports:

Installation

NEW:

  • Download OruxMaps v5.5.22 or later from the 'Google Play Store'.
  • Copy the Athos Map - *.img file to the folder "/sdcard/oruxmaps/mapfiles/". You may use a USB cable, bluetooth in combination with the free programm 'MyPhoneExplorer' or WLAN and 'Samba Filesharing'.
  • Changes in setting-Garmin-maps-img are not necessary
  • To load the map click on the map symbol - 'load map' - and select an offline map ('Athos').

OLD:

  • Download OruxMaps v4.8.1 (1) or later from the 'market' or here.
  • Install the OruxMaps*.apk
  • Copy the Athos Map - map file to the folder "/sdcard/oruxmaps/mapfiles/". You may use a USB cable or bluetooth in combination with the free programm 'MyPhoneExplorer'.
  • To test the map you can copy any Athos GPS track from the internet (*.gpx) to the folder "/sdcard/oruxmaps/tracklogs/" and open it. The menu and the handling of OruxMaps is very clear and must not be described.

FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

This section was updated on 2012-04-28

Can I send you GPS tracks to improve the map?

Yes, please send them to 'thetimelord (at) gmx.at' - The format might be *.gpx, *.gdb, *.asc, *.txt, *.csv, *.kml, *.kmz. Updates on the Athos Map are planned in intervals of 6 to 12 months.

How can I create an own Garmin Map?

1) Create the Topography Grid:
-convert from Oasis Montaj to ESRI binary *.flt *.hdr
-convert from ESRI ArcGis to *.asc
-convert Script/PlugIn for ArcGis to USGS DEM
-use 3DEM to read the DEM

2) Draw Streets/Coastlines with Oasis (UTM34N)
-Conversion to WGS84 in the database
-Drawing of line paths (long, lat column) in a new Map without legend
-Select only line paths and create an shape file (Map-Export)

3) Convert points (z.B. monestaries) directly from the Oasis database to a shapefiles

4) Create the polish format files (*.mp) with GPSMapEdit
-import the shapefiles and finally export a *.img file (Garmin/img/cgpsmapper)

-before export the img set the 8-digit number: e.g. 99000009 under File-Map Properties-CGSmapp Export

5) Installation of your own MapSource Map
-create the /*.tdb/*.reg files with cpreview.exe (Filename=99000009 in *.txt for the 99000009.img as an input file)
-import of the *.reg file
-change the *.reg file for your operating system (32/64 bit) and adapt the file paths. Note that you have to use the double back-slashes. The Athos Map uses a FID of 62 (=hex;3E,00) - for MapSource and a FID of 63 (=hex;3F,00) - for BaseCamp. Note that in the registry the 'inverse' hex numbers are used.

x) Problems:
Often the .tdb file is not created correctly. Open it in a hex editor and change bits 5 and 6 which should be the Athos Map FID as shown in your .reg file (i.e.: 3F,00).

Where do I get the Zwerger Map?

The legendary map of high details of Athos was published in Austria by Reinhold Zwerger. Available editions of the Zwerger Map are that of 1996 and 2001. As a member of 'The Friends of Mount Athos' you can order the map at http://www.athosfriends.org . Otherwise you might directly contact Veronika Zwerger (V.Zwerger at gmx.at).

What files are necessary to use the Athos Map 2012?
  Athos.img The Garmin/img/cgpsmapper file format
  Athos.MDX
Athos.mp Polish format for Garmin MapSource (not the file for GPSMapEdit)
  Athos.TDB
Athos_map6.3_32bit.reg Registry file for 32bit O/S (must be edited)
Athos_map6.3_64bit.reg Registry file for 64bit O/S (must be edited)

How can a MapEdit *.mp file be converted to a *.kml file?

There were several online converters that provide this function:

Which layers are found in the individual *.kml file of the Athos Map 2012?
boundary.kml boundary between land and sea
residential_streets.kml smallest streets (maybe also trails)
  forest_roads.kml streets accessible by vehicle)
main_roads.kml similar to the forest roads, but directly connects two monasteries or an monasteries with an Arsanas (Ars.)
  trails.kml trails, hiking paths, tracks
topography.kml topography with 50 m contour lines and symbols for the peaks
  monasteries.kml labels of the Monasteries
  skiti.kml labels of the Skiti
label_marine.kml labels of the maritime shipping (Ars.)
label_topo.kml labels of topographic regions or locations
  springs.kml springs, wells

  • Install the Athos Map for the MapSource and directly send it to the GPS device.
  • Use IMG2GPS to install the Athos Map without Garmin MapSource: select the *.img and transfer it to the GPS device. IMG2GPS v.2.81 1 2 | Homepage 1 2 |. You might use other programs (not tested) such as GPSSendMap 1,

To test the map on your GPS device you might insert a waypoint at a nearby location (N 40.1419 & E 24.3032) and zoom to it.

The following explains how to create a *.map file from OpenStreet files such as *.osm or *.pbf using Osmosis and Mapsforge with the plugin mapfile-writer. Here I describe the application for Windows 7 and cygwin.

  • Extract 'osmosis-0.40.1' to a folder, e.g. E:\tmp\osmosis-0.40.1
  • Copy mapsforge-mapfile-writer-0.2.4.jar to the folder E:\tmp\osmosis-0.40.1\plugins
  • You might need to add the absolute path in your system variable: control panel - system - advanced settings - environment variables - PATH: E:\tmp\osmosis-0.40.1\bin (you have to restart)
  • You might edit the osmosis.bat to get such a command string: 'DEXEC java -cp e:/tmp/osmosis-0.40.1/lib/default/plexus-classworlds-*.jar -Dapp.home=e:/tmp/osmosis-0.40.1 -Dclassworlds.conf=e:/tp/osmosis-0.40.1/config/plexus.conf org.codehaus.classworlds.Launcher --rb file=AthosMap2012_OpenStreet_01.osm.pbf --mw file=testmap bbox=40.113460,23.862130,40.454150,24.399610'
  • Open cygwin shell an enter './bin/osmosis --rb file=AthosMap2012_OpenStreet_01.osm.pbf --mw file=test.map bbox=40.113460,23.862130,40.454150,24.399610 map-start-position=40.2240,24.2417'.
  • If you use the xml version of OpenStreetMap file format (*.osm) you have to use the '--rx' flag.

The following explains to create a *.bin file from OpenStreet files such as *.osm or *.pbf using Navit. Here I describe the application for Windows 7 and cygwin.

  • Download cygwin and install it with the following settings: automake, autoconf, gtk2-x11-devel, libQt4Gui-devel, libQtSql4--devel, gcc, g++ (for qt rendered), gettext-devel, diffutils, pkgconfig, xorg-x11-devel, glib2-devel, pango-devel, atk-devel, libtool, make, rsvg, wget, cvs .
  • Run cygwin and type 'make', and 'make install'
  • You might need to add the absolute path in your system variable: control panel - system - advanced settings - environment variables - PATH: E:\tmp\navit\bin (you have to restart)
  • Type 'maptool -i AthosMap2012_OpenStreet.osm AthosMap2012_OpenStreet.bin'
  • Create a map for Garmin Mapsource and provde a *.img file. How to do this is explained here.
  • Download the tool GMapTool v.0.61 to create a BaseCamp compatible map. - The MS bit has to change from MS=1 to 0. In addition BaseCamp seem to need a (empty) DEM.
  • Select under 'Files' the *.img, under 'Options' the GTK+ design, verbose output, advanced options and the path to cGPSmapper, under 'Split' create files for MapSource, mapset name, select Mapset FID=63 PID=1, and add empty DEM. Start with 'split selected'.
  • Download osmconvert here.
  • Open command window and type 'osmconvert AthosMap2012_v32_mp2osm.osm --out-pbf >tmp.pbf'.
  • Sotiris Malasiotis click.
  • Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA) click.
